Lata Mangeshkar was among the 14 distinguished people of the country chosen for the Padma Vibhushan award on the occasion of Re­public Day.

Ashok Kumar was honoured with the Padma Bhushan while the names of lyricist Javed Akhtar and veteran actress Sulochana were announced for the Padma Shri. All the awards were announced by president K.R. Narayanan.

Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Govinda, Salman Khan, Rani Mukerji, Javed Jaffrey and Ayesha Julka participated in a cultural show – Bharat Gaurav – in New Delhi on the eve of Republic Day, highlighting 50 years of Indian cinema.

The show was inaugurated by prime minister Atal Behari Vaj­payee and organised by producer Pahlaj Nihalani. Shatru­ghan Sinha compered it.

Karan Johar’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai broke a 50-year re­cord at Sehore Talkies, Sehore (in M.P.) by drawing all shows full in first week. No film had ever drawn all full houses for a week before this super-hit film.
