Three films – Vishal Bhardwaj’s Maqbool, Mahesh Bhatt’s Paap and Vijaypat Singhania’s Woh Tera Naam Tha – were released on 30th January.
While Maqbool won a lot of critical acclaim, Paap bombed and Woh Tera Naam Tha was a resounding disaster.
Yesteryear actress and singer Suraiya was admitted to Hurkissondas Hospital in Bom- bay in a serious condition. The 79-year-old actress had not been keeping well since some days.
Samajwadi Party MP Amar Singh celebrated his birthday on 27th January in Delhi where a number of bigwigs from the film industry were seen. Amitabh Bachchan was, of course, there.
The government of India on 25th January announced the list of people for the Republic Day honours and among them was Amrita Pritam on whose story Pinjar was based. She was to be honoured with the Padma Vibhushan award. Gulzar and veteran Bengali film actor Soumitra Chatterjee were nominated for the Padma Bhushan awards. Anupam Kher and singer Hariharan were named for the Padma Shri.
Tina Munim and Shatrughan Sinha’s wife, Poonam Sinha, were appointed on the panel of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) which was being reconstituted at that time.
Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar and Priyanka Chopra’s Waqt – The Race Against Time went before the camera on 30th January with a schedule of seven days. The film was directed by Vipul Shah who also produced it jointly with Eros International.
