Not Just Luck, Surely!
July 4, 2009 by TFSJ
If many in the trade condemned New York as a bad film, there were several who felt, it would do well only because of Yash Chopra’s luck and because the public finally, after three months, had at least a film with face value, to watch.
While the point about Chopra’s luck factor can’t be proved or disproved, the other reason put forth definitely can be discussed. To dismiss off the success of New York as being due only to the fact that it has some face value is not at all fair to the efforts of the people behind the film.
If New York is doing well only because the audience has been hungry for entertainment, Paying Guests and Kal Kissne Dekha, released a week and two weeks respectively before New York, should’ve run for the same reason. Especially Paying Guests, because it cost a third of the amount New York cost to make and also because it was designed as a comedy and, therefore, should have been more entertaining for the audience which was thirsting for entertainment.
But both, Paying Guests and Kal Kissne Dekha bombed because they didn’t have what the audience wanted. The trade needs to understand that there’s more than mere luck behind the success story of Yash Chopra. The efforts and intelligence of the team of Yash Raj Films are actually the primary reasons for the banner’s successes and hits. If it was just the luck factor working in its favour, why did Yash Raj Films deliver debacles like Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, Roadside Romeo and Tashan, all in one year?
