Trade Proved Wrong – Once Again!
July 4, 2009 by TFSJ
With the success of Yash Chopra’s New York, the smiles have returned to the faces of the exhibitors – owners and controllers of multiplex cinemas as well as single-screen cinemas.
Like schools and parks, cinemas also look nice only when they are crowded with people. But there were simply no consistent crowds in cinemas all over India since three months. Finally, last week, the crowds returned – and how! – to make cinemas a pleasurable sight for all. Unfortunately, the trade had once again dismissed New York as a film that wouldn’t run. Comments like, “It will crash tomorrow”, “Monday ko saaf ho jaayegi” and “Picture mein dum nahin hai” were being passed on the day the film released.
It appeared as if the very trade which had been praying for a success/hit at the box-office, was resenting the success of New York. Of course, the negative comments didn’t make any difference to the paying public which continued to patronise the film through the weekend and thereafter too. The film, in other words, didn’t crash nor was it wiped out on Monday. It had much more dum than the industry people thought it had.
