Review of It’s Complicated (English)
February 27, 2010 by FSJ

On the whole, Nancy Meyers’ romcom drama will only appeal to single women from the baby boomer generation; a very niche audience. So, it won’t have an easy run at the cinemas.
Memories of a separation can make women a little less vulnerable to the lure of the urge. In Universal Pictures’ It’s Complicated (A), Jane (Meryl Streep) falls in bed, and in love, with her ex-husband, Jake (Alec Baldwin), in old age; but when she meets a man, Adam (Steve Martin) who understands her very well, she’s undecided for a while.
She goes down to have a drink alone in the pub, and comes across Jake. “Dance?” he asks her. “Who, me?” she says. They get on the floor. He puts his arm around her waist. She utters a sigh. And moments later, they are exhausted after a different kind of dance, in bed.
She’s thrilled, like a little girl. He’s happy, too, to be with her again. But there’s a slight hitch: he is married to another girl, and she begins to hit it off with her architect.
The script by Nancy Meyers (writer-director) moves at a lethargic pace. It has very little entertainment value, save the occasional laughs. The character that Streep plays is a confused one who gets turned on to the same degree by both men, and finds it easy to switch from one to the other in a fragment of a moment.
Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin pack in a punch, and both share a great chemistry with Meryl Streep; so much so that, frankly, one wouldn’t really care whom she finally decides to settle down with. Meryl Streep does marijuana in one of the scenes, but acts as if she’s hooked on ecstasy throughout.
The songs are ordinary. And the orchestration that one associates with Hans Zimmer (who co-directs the music with Heitor Pereira) is missing.
On the whole, Nancy Meyers’ romcom drama will only appeal to single women from the baby boomer generation; a very niche audience. So, it won’t have an easy run at the cinemas.
