Review of Phaans – Ek Jasoos Ki Kahani
February 6, 2010 by TFSJ
On the whole, Phaans – Ek Jasoos Ki Kahani will fail to make any mark at the box-office. It may not be able to complete even a week’s run. J.C. Film Productions’ Phaans – Ek Jasoos Ki Kahani (UA) is an insipid spy thriller with patriotism as its core theme.
Jawahar (Jawahar Lal Jairath) is an Indian spy in Pakistan, who returns to India. But his contributions are left unacknowledged. His son, Jatin, goes to Pakistan as a spy to retrieve an important file. But the Indian government declares him a traitor and he commits suicide. Finally, Jatin’s daughter, Sameera (Shieva), too, goes to Pakistan to retrieve the same file. Unaware that Sameera is a spy, Pakistani minister Iqbal Khan (Raza Murad) and his son, Imran (Moin Khan), welcome her to their house as Jawahar is a good friend of theirs. From a computer in their residence, Sameera does finally get hold of the important file and escapes to India with it.
The story (A. Chitransh) is abysmally poor and the screenplay (by Ramesh Modi) is built solely on convenience. The way Sameera lays her hands on the secret file, it would appear that it was the easiest thing to do in the world!
Jawahar Lal Jairath is ordinary. Vidya Sinha, as his wife, has almost nothing to do. Shieva is passable. Kanan Malhotra, as her boyfriend, gets little opportunity to show his acting prowess. Raza Murad and Moin Khan are okay. Reshma Modi, Amita Nangia, Aadil Rana, Shiraz Murtuza and Rakesh Hans lend ordinary support.
Director A. Chitransh could have done a lot better by working more on the story and screenplay. Cinematography (Thomas A. Xavier) is good. Music (Dilip Sen and Milind Joshi) comprises one good qawwali but little else. Production and technical aspects are barely passable.
On the whole, Phaans – Ek Jasoos Ki Kahani will fail to make any mark at the box-office. It may not be able to complete even a week’s run.
Released on 5-2-’10 at Imperial and 1 other cinema of Bombay thru Friends Movies. Publicity & opening: dull. …….Also released in C.I. and Rajasthan. Opening was poor everywhere.
