India is a treasure house of stories that could be mined for wonderful animation films. Heroics, principles and the magic of make-believe are all present in our mythologies and fables.

That’s what makes director EzhilVendan’sshabbily-handled 3D animation filma tragedy. The legend of Mahiravana is a little-known chapter of the Ramayana.

The nobility of Ram is demonstrated when Ravana falls on the battlefield but his life is spared. Ram follows the ethics of warfare where you don’t assault an unarmed enemy and he lets off Ravana saying he’ll meet him on the battle ground the next day.

But Ravana has a few tricks up his sleeve with his several heads popping up to articulate his thought process.

Ram and Sita are held captive in the nether world of half-brother Mahiravana who has super powers. Hanuman has to rescue them before they’re destroyed by the seemingly unlimited strength of Mahiravana.

What a potent premise for a film laden with special effects and a great adventure. The world underground with all its diverse creatures could have been as interesting as Lord Of The Rings. But the execution of this story is so immature that even the 90+ minutes seem long and restless.

Unlike say, animated films like Lion King which came out more than two decades ago, it’s disappointing that our animation films still can’t match the technical finesse of the West. The lip sync is so poor that every character seems stilted and artificial. If an animation film fails to make its characters reach out to the viewer and make you start believing in their story, it’s a waste of resources. And that’s the problem with Hanuman Vs Mahiravana. The screenplay, the dialogues, the melody-less music and the unrefined animation collaborate to make this an epic that will not give life to the character of Mahiravana.

Verdict: For an animation film that holds little appeal, Hanuman Vs Mahiravana gets a 1.5* rating.
