The sheer comfort of the world of ABBA is as refreshing as the crisp air on that beautiful Greek island. The idyllic island where Donna Sheridan put down her roots and raised her daughter Sophie as a single mother in the first instalment. That was Meryl Streep juggling with Harry, Bill and Sam, the three men who could be Sophie’s father.

It’s Sophie’s sequel this time, as she opens an aesthetically warm restaurant as an ode to Donna, her late mother who’s now a picture on the wall.

Director Ol Parker does a balancing act between a prequel and a sequel by telling Donna’s story, kicking off with the number ‘When I Kissed The Teacher’ in Oxford.Donna’s wondrous wanderings with music on her lips that’s ‘sweet as sugarcane’, her encounters with Harry, Bill and Sam, and settling down on that island she instinctively knew was home. Of her two close friends from college with whom she formed The Dynamos, the music band. And having Sophie light up her life.

Parker keeps swinging between Donna’s past and Sophie’s present with parallels between the two. Like a storm that Sam could sniff with Donna then and with Sophie now.

The writing is happily contrived with all the people, invited and not invited, turning up to make Sophie’s restaurant opening a smashing success, after a few will-it-work-out moments.

Soak in the music of ABBA as the cast breaks into old favourites ‘Mamma Mia’, ‘Knowing Me, Knowing You’, ‘Dancing Queen’ and ‘Fernando’, and makes you want to hum along.

There’s a bit of wit too with Donna’s girl-pals Tanya and Rosie and all the hunks around.

And then there’s the cast that you can go cross-eyed over. From Lily James playing young Donna and Amanda Seyfried as Sophie to staple charmers Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard as the three fathers. With Andy Garcia as Fernando teaming up with Cher, no less. And the ever-reliable Meryl Streep who steals your heart and prods a tear with one shadowy appearance.

Verdict: Go for the music, go for the actors, go for the feeling that this is a beautiful world.

For a musical that makes you break into a song, the aptly titled Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again gets a 3* rating.
