VIVEK OBEROI-NARENDRA MODI ELECTION CONNECTION!
FSJ February, 2013

When Narendra Modi was sworn in as Chief Minister of Gujarat for the third consecutive time on December 26, 2012, while most prominent politicians and guests had one seat up front and their families were seated behind, there were only two family members who sat side by side in the front row – Suresh and Vivek Oberoi from Mumbai.

Visitors to the state, including the topmost industrialists of the country, who thereafter flew in to celebrate Vibrant Gujarat with the CM, were astonished when they saw Vivek Oberoi smiling at them from every street corner.

IT’S A PURE VEG LUNCH. NO ONION, NO GARLIC, NO POLITICS IS SERVED AT THE OBEROI FAMILY TABLE

Yes, Vivek has a strong connection with Modi but he doesn’t talk about it, let alone flaunt it.At the beautifully renovated Oberoi residence in Juhu, golf-player with a spiritual bent, Suresh Oberoi, serves a sumptuous, pure veg lunch. There’s no garlic, no onion and no politics served at this table.

Vivek, who has injured his foot (he is limping) after trekking barefoot to the annual Sabarimala pilgrimage in Kerala, joins in for a quick bite. “I love veg food,” he says. He lived on it for two years. But to make up for a deficiency in B12, “I have the occasional lamb or fish.”

There is a serenity in Suresh Oberoi’s bungalow that Vivek has rebuilt where Priyanka and he have an independent floor, his parents have another and the whole family meets on the ground floor for a meal. “I didn’t step into the house even once while they were renovating it,” remarks dad Suresh. Vivek and Priyanka who will be parents in the first week of Feb (the baby, slated to arrive on Valentine’s Day, is now expected earlier) did up the house just as they wanted it.

And it is lovely – paintings on the wall, a huge home theatre, and a comfortably upholstered area where you can lie and see the sky through a glass ceiling.

SURESH OBEROI’S SPIRITUAL DISCOURSES DRAW 30,000 STRONG CROWDS. MOM YASHI DOES ALTERNATE HEALING. SON VIVEK’S QUIET SOCIAL WORK CLEARLY HAS ITS SOURCE IN HIS GENES

Suresh Oberoi, always a respected actor, is sought after for his spiritual discourses all over the country. Very elegant wife Yashodhara is a huge believer in alternate healing and is forever helping all and sundry who seek her assistance. Vivek Oberoi’s very quietly dispensed social work therefore has its source in his genes.

VIVEK HAS THREE BABIES ON RELEASE IN FEB – FIRST, WIFE PRIYANKA IS DUE TO DELIVER THEIR BABY, THEN TIPS’ JAYANTABHAI KI LUV STORY WILL BE IN THE THEATRES, FOLLOWED BY ZILLA GHAZIABAD

The only time the talk turns to films is when his parents proudly watch the bright and cheerful promo of Jayantabhai Ki Luv Story. It’s a Valentine’s Day release – it will be Vivek’s second baby in Feb. He has a third as well with Zilla Ghaziabad also on release in the same month. So make that three babies for Vivek this February!

Clearly, the days of the KLPD mess (what a terrible film for Vivek to have done) are behind the actor. 2013 has begun well. Sis Meghna delivered baby Arjun in December and she’s coming over to spend a few days with her family. It will be an eventful year all around with Rakesh Roshan’s Krrish 3 rounding it off during Diwali.

VIVEK’S FLUENCY IN HINDI IMPRESSED ATAL BIHARI VAJPAYEE SO MUCH THAT HE ROPED IN THE YOUNG ACTOR TO CAMPAIGN FOR HIS PARTY.

It’s a quiet, off-the-record catching up lunch with Suresh and Yashi. No tape recorder, no camera. But one couldn’t help but ask them about the strong Oberoi presence in Modi-land.

There is a discernible father’s pride in Suresh’s deep, well-recognised voice as he makes a passing mention of Vivek’s fluency in Hindi  (“Much better than my Hyderabadi one,” he laughs) which so impressed the language-proficient politician, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, that he had promptly roped in Oberoi Junior to campaign for his party in the Hindi belt.

NARENDRA MODI TOO, INVITED VIVEK TO GUJARAT DURING THE RECENT ELECTIONS. SURESH AND VIVEK OBEROI WERE IN THE FRONT ROW FOR MODI’S SWEARING-IN CEREMONY

And now Narendra Modi too, has grown fond of the actor who was quietly invited to Gujarat during the December 2012 elections to address a couple of rallies. That explains the eyewitness account of those who had seen Vivek’s posters everywhere during the recent Vibrant Gujarat celebration. So, will Vivek Oberoi be a favoured one of the newly sworn in CM?

“We ask nobody for any favours,” signs off Suresh as he changes the topic.Clearly, it is a personal lunch invitation that he has extended. Nothing official about it.
