Brand Neeta Lulla
FSJ May, 2013

From picking up the phone and saying, “Neeta tailor” to becoming one of the biggest family-run fashion brands of the country, the fascinating rise and rise of Neeta…and now her daughter Nishka Lulla

“I never decided to be a designer,” is the start of her story. How did ‘never’ transform into ‘forever’?  Some more candour served: “Since I was bad academically, all I wanted to do was never to study again after my Xth. I got married at 16 because I thought it was a way out of not having to study.”
Married into a family of doctors (husband Dr Shyam Lulla is a psychiatrist), she was encouraged to take up either cookery or tailoring as a hobby. A girlie thought powered her life’s ultimate achievement: “I opted for tailoring (there was nothing called ‘fashion designing’ those days) because I thought if I could learn to tailor my own clothes, I’d be able to wear new clothes every time.”
